Many mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) - previously referred to as aerial work platforms (AWPs) prior to the updated CSA and ANSI standards published in 2018 - in use today work near sensitive structures, corporate jets and glass buildings for example, that shouldn’t be damaged by coming into contact with the platform.

If a collision were to occur it could potentially result in costly project delays, machine or structural repairs and worst of all, possible injury to the machine operator.

Following the automotive industry’s expanding adoption of sensor-based systems for operator awareness, machine control and autonomy, the demand for similar enhanced detection systems on MEWPs is growing. With the introduction of enhanced detection systems in the access industry, operators will have increased confidence maneuvering boom and scissor lifts on the job.

There is a lot that goes into developing enhanced detection systems. What sensor technology is best suited to the machine? Where should the sensors be placed on the platform? How are the warning zones for the sensors established and where should they be exactly?

To learn more about how these enhanced detection systems continue to evolve in an effort to keep the job site safer read Machine Design’s “How to Keep Workers Safe on MEWPs”.
