First Look: JLG’s New X660SJ Compact Crawler Boom Lift

It’s time to get straight to work. Brand new to the market, JLG now offers its first-ever straight-jib (SJ) compact crawler boom lift — the X660SJ
X660SJ First Look at a Glance
The boom on this telescopic compact crawler boom lift extends out in a straight line, by utilizing one or more telescoping boom sections, to give users enough vertical reach to directly access overhead job sites. This design allows operators to take full advantage of the boom’s entire range of horizontal reach.

Because of their design, telescoping models like the new X660SJ can typically reach higher than articulating boom lifts, which means these models provide both maximum height and maximum outreach to:

• Access work from a distance, especially where the terrain or obstacles prevent close proximity
• Get into working position more efficiently

In addition to its telescopic boom design, this X660SJ is designed with several unique features that are key to efficiently accessing work at height and will transform how facility and construction professionals get work done at height, indoors and outdoors.

For example, its architecture enables up to two occupants each full height more efficiently, while its crawler-mounted design and 40-percent gradeability means operators can climb slopes with ease compared to standard lifts.

And, its 2-ft 11-in profile and less than 7,400-lbs footprint allow operators to go more places around the job site, such as through gates and standard doorways to work in yards and public buildings.

Let’s take a closer look…

Key specs

This model is spec’d for operators to gain performance and productivity on job sites. It has a 65-ft 7-in platform height, a 71-ft 7-in working height and a best-in-class 39-ft horizontal outreach. And, its platform offers a class-leading 500-lbs unrestricted capacity.

But even with all that reach and capacity, this machine’s stowed width allows it to fit through a double doorway with ease.

The X660SJ includes air, water and power lines to the platform, helping you tackle everything from window washing to general maintenance more efficiently.

And when it’s time to transport the machine, operators can use the integrated forklift pockets and lifting eyes that come standard on all JLG compact crawler boom lifts to load and unload the machine.

So, now that we know the specs, let’s see how this straight-jib machine takes productivity up a notch

Applications

With indoor/outdoor versatility, the X660SJ is ideal for a wide range of applications, including arboriculture, painting, general maintenance, electrical, HVAC and window washing, on a variety of job sites, such as auditoriums, arenas, atriums and outdoor structures.

When designing the X660SJ, we enclosed its powertrack within the boom. This protects internal components and reduces the impact of any debris that may come in contact with this area during tasks, such as tree trimming or cleaning.

Outriggers

The X660SJ is equipped with multi-position, one-touch, self-leveling outriggers to increase stability. These outriggers can be positioned in wide or narrow configurations to help users maximize the work envelope while maintaining the flexibility to work in tight spaces. When you’re working with the outriggers in the narrow configuration, this machine maximizes operators’ swing capabilities to extend over the side of the machine.

Envelope Tracking

Envelope tracking operation enables operators to work alongside buildings, walls and other infrastructure more efficiently. Envelope tracking operation allows this machine to follow buildings for a scissor-like effect.

With a single control function, operators can boom up/down, while also telescoping out/in, so that the platform travels a path perpendicular to the ground. This feature keeps users closer to the work with fewer hassles. The controls display will show operators that it’s in this mode with a special icon, which can be overridden. All operators need to do is momentarily engage the telescope function while they're booming up/down, and the machine will return to normal operation.

Go Home and Back to Work

If the application requires operators to frequently transition from working at height to the ground, the Go Home and Back To Work functions on the X660SJ can help users increase productivity and save time.

To use the Back to Work function, users first go to their desired working height. Once there, they can record their position by pressing the “Back to Work” button. This saves the working position so they can return to the recorded height and pick up where they left off by pressing and holding a single button.

Similarly, the Go Home function lets users automatically return the machine to a stowed position. It’s also activated by a single button and can be used in combination with the Back to Work function to move from the recorded working height more efficiently to a stowed position and back again.

Power Options

A crew’s work environment can greatly impact the type of power they want — and need — on a worksite. That’s why we’ve given equipment owners and fleet managers the ability to select from three power options based on a project’s requirements.

The first option is bi-energy with a hydraulic drive. This gives total flexibility to use the same machine across indoor and outdoor applications.

Machines with the bi-energy option have an internal combustion engine, along with a independent, lithium-ion battery pack.

The operator can change between these power sources to fit their application, such as using the engine for faster drive or the electric power in areas where zero emissions or less noise is required.

Although the bi-energy X660SJ offers both power sources, its engine does not charge the batteries as it would in a hybrid machine.
