The Future of Telescopic Boom Lifts
Jan 29, 2026
At A Glance: Telescopic Boom Lift Trends
- Customers want more: Higher performance, larger platform capacities and maximum uptime
- Design priorities have shifted from just specs to solving real job-site challenges
- Innovations like JLG’s rapid-replaceable platform cut swap time from hours to minutes
- The future lies in smarter engineering, not just heavier steel
- Every innovation at JLG is built on three pillars: Safety, Performance and Reliability
Today’s job sites demand more — more reach, more capacity, more uptime. But, meeting those demands takes more than just bigger specs.
Here’s a look at how JLG is rethinking telescopic boom lift design to continue to solve real job-site challenges, boost fleet efficiency and keep crews productive at height.
What are customers asking for in the latest telescopic boom lift designs?
In short, more of everything. Our customers are demanding greater performance, durability and reliability across the board. On today’s job sites, timelines are getting tighter, so they need equipment that allows them to move faster and get more done without downtime. For example, they’re looking for lifts that can carry more materials, more tools and more workers, so larger platform capacities are a must. They also expect machines to move efficiently when repositioning at height, and most importantly, they need to trust that the equipment will work day in and day out. Uptime is everything, and customers turn to JLG because they know we prioritize performance, safety and reliability in our equipment offerings.
Are there any challenges in meeting these design requirements?
In the past, boom lifts were primarily designed to deliver best-in-class specifications, whether it was to gain more work height and capacity or to get a higher horsepower engine. Today, the focus has shifted to developing designs that solve job site problems and meet user needs.
Today, telescopic boom lifts are used across a wide range of industries. The diversity in use cases means the range of customer requirements is massive. Supporting all of them can be complex in the design process. While we can engineer our way to solutions, prioritizing which features to build into the next generation of boom lifts is one of the most challenging aspects. But, we stay grounded by focusing on our three pillars: Safety, Performance and Reliability. We won’t sacrifice one for the other.
How is telescopic boom lift design developing for the future?
The future isn’t just about flashy features or taller machines. If a machine isn’t solving a real job-site problem, it’s just a shiny new piece of equipment. The real opportunity lies in small, impactful enhancements, such as better power options for the platform or rapid-replaceable platforms that drastically reduce downtime in rental fleets.
Here’s an example of how: The new JLG® rapid replaceable platform allows rental companies to change out damaged platforms in 15-20 minutes, compared to several hours with the previous design. That’s a big deal. rental companies are required to send out lifts without damaged platforms. And because these machines could take a beating on job sites, platforms often come back with damage. With the old process, swapping platforms was time-consuming and labor-intensive. Now, with this simple but smart enhancement, equipment can be turned around faster, get back out on rent sooner and stay compliant with safety regulations. It’s a small improvement on paper, but it has a huge impact on operational efficiency and overall customer satisfaction.
Ultimately, the future is about helping customers be more productive at height. That could mean new base machine configurations or smarter accessories, but at JLG, every innovation has to tie back to those same three pillars — safer, high-performing and reliable equipment.
What are JLG’s plans for its telescopic boom lift designs in the future?
For JLG, what will make a new generation of machines different from today’s offerings will be that we won’t just throw more steel at them to solve the problem — we’ll innovate to integrate smart engineering and advanced technology, keeping the weight down while maximizing strength and productivity.
