JLG University offers a comprehensive experience tailored to all learning types and construction industry use cases, from steel to concrete and more.

Being a MEWP operator means being flexible. Flexible to scheduling, flexible to client demands and flexible to weather and jobsite conditions. But one area that requires that flexibility is often overlooked: training. A Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) qualification is just the gateway to a long career as an operator. Training needs to be a part of your career at every level. That’s why JLG Industries revamped its JLG University platform.

Here's what you need to know about the training available to you as a MEWP operator or access industry leader.

ANSI and OSHA Training

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a private group that sets the safety guidelines for the access industry, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is the governmental entity that enforces them.

Training also varies by how the lift is driven. In short, you need to determine what type of lifts you own, rent or operate and select training by type for each operator that meets both ANSI best practices and OSHA laws. JLG University courses include both ANSI- and OSHA-required curriculum and cover all types of equipment in the JLG family.

In-person and Online Training

While OSHA training is the minimum requirement and ANSI is the recommended, both can be completed online or in person. The educational community considers a mix of training the most effective in the long run.

  • Benefits of online training include: Self-paced learning that meets the needs of individual trainees with a greater variety of learning styles (visual vs. auditory, for instance, or those who prefer to consume textbook vs. video instruction). Online coursework is generally lower-cost and more flexible to schedule.

  • Benefits of in-person training include: More structured or organized coursework that’s ideal for some types of auditory learners and kinesthetic, or hands-on, education. In-person is the best way to improve via peer-to-peer and group interaction and allows trainers to offer more differentiated instruction and can reach learners where they are, no matter their previous level of experience.

Hands-on and Theoretical Training

While some training programs leave all theoretical (think: “book smart”) learning to online and hands-on to in-person courses, JLG University goes beyond. Subscribers can learn in a traditional classroom-style setting in person at JLG training facilities in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania or find qualified trainers near them nationwide. And online, JLG University is easy to use and fully customizable, so you can search and save training videos even on a mobile device to use while following through hands-on. Participants can also get personalized assistance online and make suggestions.

Operator, Technician or Trainer Training

Unlike some training institutes or programs, JLG University is inclusive, no matter your role. Technicians learn about parts, service and technical requirements to enable their machines and operators. Operators learn to be safe and confident on the jobsite. And when that confidence peaks? Take your career to the next level with JLG University’s train-the-trainer course, led by our network of trainer trainers (say that 3x fast!).

JLG University is perfectly suited to both employer-backed and independent learning. If you’re self-sponsored, JLG University can be the first step to a rewarding career in the access industry, as an operator, technician or manager. And if you’re looking to get your employer on board, managers can assign courses, view progress and download certificates, making their lives easier, too.
