6 Things to Do When a MEWP Comes Back from a Job Site

When a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) returns from a project, equipment owners should take the time to inspect and maintain the machine thoroughly. Confirming the MEWP is fully operational and job-ready helps maximize its lifespan, reduce downtime, and keep operators productive.

Use this comprehensive checklist to guide your maintenance and inspection process between projects:

What to check when MEWPs return from work AAG

1. Conduct a Visual Inspection

A thorough visual check helps identify any damage or wear that may have occurred on-site.

General Condition

  • Inspect the MEWP’s frame, platform and structural components for visible damage
  • Check for wear and tear on tires or tracks

Platform and Guardrails

  • Ensure the platform surface and guardrails are intact and free from damage
  • Verify that guardrails and access gates are secure and functioning properly

Tires

  • Inspect tires for proper inflation, wear, and damage based on the manufacturer’s specifications
  • Confirm that all four tires match in size, ply rating and manufacturer to maintain stability
  • Check for any embedded foreign objects that could lead to future issues

Tracks

  • Inspect tracks for proper tension and signs of excessive wear
  • Frame and Chassis
  • Look for cracks, dents or other structural concerns
  • Check for loose bolts or connections that may need tightening

2. Perform Operational Checks

Testing all key functions ensures the MEWP operates smoothly and safely.

Hydraulic System

  • Test all hydraulic functions, including lifting, lowering and extending mechanisms
  • Check for leaks and verify that hydraulic fluid levels are adequate

Electrical System

  • Ensure all controls, lights and alarms are functioning correctly
  • Inspect wiring for any wear or potential hazards

Boom and Lift Mechanisms

  • Operate the boom and lift to confirm smooth motion Check for signs of wear on boom arms, cylinders and pivot points

Safety Devices and Sensors

  • Test tilt sensors, load-sensing devices and emergency stop buttons
  • Ensure warning lights and alarms are fully functional
  • Harness Attachment Points
  • Verify that harness attachment points are secure and in good condition
  •

    3. Check Fluid Levels and Quality

Fluids play a critical role in the machine’s performance and longevity.

    Hydraulic Fluid

  • Check hydraulic fluid levels and quality; replace or top off as needed
  • Engine Oil and Coolant

  • Ensure engine oil and coolant levels are within the manufacturer’s recommended range
  •

    4. Inspect and Maintain Decals

Decals provide critical safety and operational information.

    Decal Inspection

  • Check for any faded, damaged or missing warning labels and instructional decals
  • Replace any decals that are unreadable to ensure operators have the necessary guidance
  • Verify that load capacity charts are visible and accurate
  • Because decals can wear out over time, equipment owners must ensure all labels remain legible before sending the MEWP out on another project.

    5. Clean and Remove Debris

Keeping the MEWP clean prevents unnecessary wear and blockages.

    General Cleaning

    • Remove dirt, mud and debris from all surfaces, including moving parts
    • Clear out any material that could obstruct operation or cause excessive wear

    6. Update Documentation and Schedule Maintenance

Accurate records and timely repairs keep the MEWP in working condition.

    Inspection Reports

    • Complete a post-project inspection report, documenting any findings or necessary repairs
    • Service Records
    • Ensure any issues reported during use are addressed and documented
    • Verify that past maintenance records align with current inspection findings

    Compliance & Readiness

    • Confirm the MEWP meets all regulatory and industry standards requirements
    • Schedule necessary maintenance or repairs before the next deployment

    Immediate Repairs

    • Address any mechanical issues before the MEWP is used again
    • If repairs are needed, ensure they are completed before sending the equipment back out

Enhance Your Maintenance Skills with Service Training

By following this checklist, equipment owners can maintain their MEWPs in peak condition, helping to support safe use, efficiency and reliability from project to project. And, always reference the appropriate Operational and Safety Manual for detailed pre-start inspection procedures and manufacturer-specific requirements to ensure proper operation of the MEWP.

A well-maintained MEWP minimizes downtime, extends its lifespan and keeps operators working with confidence. Whether you want to perform basic maintenance on your JLG® equipment or troubleshoot your hydraulic and electrical systems, learn more about maintaining your MEWP at JLG University
