TIB 15-41 Engine Cold Start Enhancement

JLG has received reports of hard starting of the JLG® Model 340AJ equipped with GM .97L dual fuel engine while operating on gasoline and in cold weather applications.

Models affected: JLG Model 340AJ with Dual Fuel GM Engine

JLG has received reports of hard starting of the JLG® Model 340AJ equipped with GM .97L dual fuel engine while operating on gasoline and in cold weather applications.

The engine supplier has developed updated ECM software for the GM .97L dual fuel engine. If your machine experiences difficulty starting in cold weather, please contact the JLG District Service Manager (DSM) or Service Provider in your region to schedule the software installation.

When equipped with the recommended engine oil (5W-30) and the ECM software update, the engine should start in temperatures as low as +15oF. For use in temperatures below 15oF, JLG offers optional Cold Weather Start* and an Artic packages**.

*The Cold Weather Start package includes a battery blanket, a hydraulic tank heater and an engine block heater.

**The Arctic package includes the same items in the Cold Weather Start package plus arctic hoses (drive and steer only) and a main boom cable, extreme cold weather engine oil, fuel conditioner and an oversized foot switch.

Electric Low Fuel Shutoff

JLG boom lifts manufactured after 2011 have an “electric low fuel shutoff” feature, which shuts the machine down between 1/8 and 1/4 of a tank.
JLG boom lifts manufactured after 2011 have an “electric low fuel shutoff” feature, which shuts the machine down between 1/8 and 1/4 of a tank. This prevents the machine from running out of fuel completely and potentially damaging the engine as well as the fuel system. When the machine shuts off, it will not flash a code, but the analyzer will display “low fuel level engine shutdown." No need to reset: Simply add fuel, and the machine will restart.

Overcrank Protection and JSP Cover Torque

With the incorporation of Tier 4i (ULS) engines into the telehandler models listed above, Cummins has added an overcrank protection feature to prevent overheating of the starter solenoid due to intentional continuous cranking.
Models Affected: JLG G6-42A, G9-43A, G10-43A, G10-55A, G12-55A and SkyTrak 6036, 6042, 8042, 10042, 10054 Telehandlers with Tier 4i (ULS) Cummins Engines, (Models QSB3.3 and 4.5)

With the incorporation of Tier 4i (ULS) engines into the telehandler models listed above, Cummins has added an overcrank protection feature to prevent overheating of the starter solenoid due to intentional continuous cranking. The starter manufacturer dictates the solenoid may be engaged for a maximum of 30 seconds at a time. An attempt to exceed the 30-second interval will result in the interruption of current through the starter lockout relay until the solenoid has an opportunity to cool. The cooldown period takes approximately 120 seconds and will allow the relay to reset.

The starter also has a feature that prevents accidental crossing of the solenoid terminals while servicing, called a JSP (Jump Start Protection) cover. If the nut securing this cover is torqued beyond the recommended value, an interruption of current through the starter solenoid may result and the engine will not crank. In the event current through the starter solenoid is lost, recheck the torque of the cover nut prior to replacing the starter.

  • Ensure that battery and battery connections are secure and corrosion-free
  • Check cannon plugs for moisture, and apply a small amount of dialectic grease to ward off moisture
  • Inspect toggle switches and joysticks at both platform and ground for boot damage; water or ice damage to one toggle can render your machine inoperative

Use the recommended lubricants, fuels and ambient working temperatures listed in your service manuals.
