DEF Specifications and Storage

JLG has received reports of DEF-related engine fault codes on JLG® and SkyTrak® telehandlers equipped with Cummins Tier 4F engines.

Models Affected: JLG® and SkyTrak® telehandlers equipped with Tier 4F Cummins Engines

JLG has received reports of DEF-related engine fault codes on JLG® and SkyTrak® telehandlers equipped with Cummins Tier 4F engines.

Ensure the DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) solution is the correct specification. Cummins recommends using only DEF solutions that maintain 32.5% (+ or -1.5%) of urea content by weight. The urea content can easily be checked with a refractometer, JLG P/N 70011925. The DEF solution must meet the requirements of International Standard ISO 22241-1 for diesel engines. There is no acceptable substitute. For engines using Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Systems, operating in the United States and Canada, DEF certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API) is recommended for use. The symbol below[U1]  will appear on the container or dispensing system to indicate certification.

DEF should be stored in sealed containers, and at 23° to 77°F (-5° to 25°C). Avoid storing containers in direct sunlight to ensure better shelf life.

Bolt Usage and Torque Application

It is extremely important to use bolts of proper length. A bolt that is too long will hit the bottom before the head is tight against its related part.

It is extremely important to use bolts of proper length. A bolt that is too long will hit the bottom before the head is tight against its related part. If a bolt is too short, there will not be enough thread area to engage and hold the part properly. When replacing bolts, use one that has the same specifications of the original, or one that is equivalent.

Unless specific torque requirements are given within the repair procedure or text, standard torque values should be used on heat-treated bolts, studs and steel nuts, in accordance with recommended shop practices. Refer to the torque chart in your machine’s service manual.

"Running at creep" on JLG ADE Boom Lifts

“Running at creep, creep switch open” is not a code that signals a problem.

“Running at creep, creep switch open” is not a code that signals a problem. The code simply alerts the operator that the creep switch is activated, and this alert will also be accompanied by an illuminated green indicator light on the platform display. Integrated into the rotary speed control on the platform display, the creep switch is activated by turning the knob all the way to the left until it clicks. At this point, the “Running at creep” code will display. Keep in mind that this code is not related to any limited switches and is limited to the rotary speed control knob.

ADE Boom Lifts: Running at Cutback Out of Transport

If your machine gives you the code “Running at cutback out of transport,” this indicates that the lift is elevated above horizontal (or telescoped out on 800S-1500SJP) and the drive speed is cutback, not that something is wrong with your equipment.

If your machine gives you the code “Running at cutback out of transport,” this indicates that the lift is elevated above horizontal (or telescoped out on 800S-1500SJP) and the drive speed is cutback, not that something is wrong with your equipment. This code is activated by limit switches and sensors, so if the machine has this reading when it is fully telescoped-in and boomed-down, a limit switch may be stuck.

9-9 or 995 Power Module Failure Personality Range Error

This code is a common code on an ES Scissor, most frequently generated by a battery connection issue or battery replacement.

This code is a common code on an ES Scissor, most frequently generated by a battery connection issue or battery replacement. However, there is an easy fix.

  • Simply go in with your analyzer under access level 1, change your model number to a different model and then shut the machine down with the e-stop switch.
  • Power the machine back up and go in with your analyzer under access level 1 again and change the model back to the correct number.
  • Shut the machine down with the e-stop switch and that should eliminate the code.

TIB 15-21 Coolant Sensor – Intermittent Fault

Certain SkyTrak branded telehandlers may experience an intermittent ‘Coolant Level’ fault due to over torque of the coolant level sensor during installation.
Models affected: SkyTrak® telehandlers 6036, 6042, 8042, 10042 and 10054 (Equipped with Tier 4F Engines)

Certain SkyTrak branded telehandlers may experience an intermittent ‘Coolant Level’ fault due to over torque of the coolant level sensor during installation. This fault is intermittent, but known failures have been experienced in the first 30 hours of operation.

When a SkyTrak branded telehandler equipped with a Tier 4F engine displays a ‘Coolant Level’ fault code in error, replace the coolant de-aeration tanks and sensor assembly, P/N 1001182255.

This is an ‘After Failure’ information bulletin, and standard warranty procedures will apply.

This part can only be ordered by a local servicing entity of JLG products. This servicing entity must have a JLG account and be capable of purchasing parts and filing warranty claims. When ordering the service kit, the servicing entity will be charged (debited) for the cost of each service part assembly.

Miller Generator - No Output

There are two very common reasons for No A/C Voltage Output from a Miller Generator installed on JLG boom lifts.

There are two very common reasons for No A/C Voltage Output from a Miller Generator installed on JLG boom lifts. Fortunately these issues can be very easily rectified. The first most common cause occurs when the generator option is not turned on in the analyzer. To turn this option on, plug in your analyzer at either location (platform or ground) and enter your Access Level 1 code. Under the Machine Set Up menu, you will find the generator options 0 = NO, 1 = Belt Drive and 2 = Hyd Drive (Hydraulic). Select the appropriate selection for your machine and then shut it down to allow your change to be saved.

The second cause that is a commonly overlooked is the inline 5 amp fuse. This fuse is located behind the engine tray near the start and auxiliary power solenoids. If this fuse is blown, the machine has no D/C voltage going to the generator control system to turn it on. Replace a blown fuse with the appropriate 5 amp fuse.

Material Hook Mode on JLG Towable Booms

Receiving the message “Running at cut back in material hook mode” on a JLG Towable Boom model indicates that the machine does not recognize the presence of the upper control box.

Receiving the message “Running at cut back in material hook mode” on a JLG Towable Boom model indicates that the machine does not recognize the presence of the upper control box. When this happens, the unit assumes that the basket has been replaced with a material hook. If the upper control box is present on the machine and this message still appears, contact the JLG service department for assistance.

This short video explains how to properly detach the platform and upper control box and install the material hook for T350/T500 model booms.
