Compliance is Critical: JLG Responds to the ANSI & CSA Standards

Rick Smith

JLG Industries

Did you know that the updated ANSI A92 (United States) and CSA B354 (Canada) standards are now in effect? It’s true – after many delays and appeals, the standards are published and active in North America as of June 1, 2020.

Compliance is critical for everyone in the industry. Why? Because adhering to these standards reduces the risk of safety hazards and prevents lost time.
JLG Responds to ANSI & CSA Standards Blog at a Glance
At JLG, we decided early on (long before the standards were published) that we were committed to meeting and exceeding the standards. To us, this meant to lead the industry by our example of being complaint as quickly as possible. Our R&D team has worked tirelessly to develop, test and produce new* JLG Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) that improve job site safety on every level.

Here are some examples of how we’ve done this in our product lines…

JLG Boom Lifts – Engine Powered

  • SkyGuard: Function reversal and audible alarm standard on all machines except Toucan and Tow Pro models (not affected by ANSI changes)
  • Wind force requirements: 28 mph outdoor wind rating
  • Load sensing system: In use and proven in markets where currently required
  • Travel speeds: No change needed to be compliant
  • Wire rope sensors: Historically compliant with redundant rope systems on some models
  • Tilt angle sensors: When activated due to slope being exceeded, boom functions go into creep speed and drive function is locked out until boom is returned to a position closer to stowed
  • Foam-filled tires: Reduces the need for additional counterweights to meet stability test standard

Scissor Lifts – Engine Powered

  • Wind force requirements: 28 mph outdoor wind rating or indoor-only designation
  • Load sensing system: Some moving to a hydraulic pressure sensing system, which is simpler and has fewer parts
  • Travel speeds: No change needed to be compliant

  • Wind force requirements: 28 mph outdoor wind rating with reduced platform capacity or indoor-only designation
  • Travel speeds: No change needed to be compliant
  • Self-closing gates and toe boards: Will replace flexible entrances

Vertical Lifts
Various aspects of JLG vertical lifts are impacted by the new ANSI standards. When applicable, modifications have been made to counterweights, available options and accessories, platform capacity and ground controls. These units have also received a wind-rating designation that classifies a unit as wind rated or indoor use only.

Training is an essential part of the updated standards and to being successful on the job. Along with our compliant equipment, we also gave our training programs a facelift and now offer a variety of standards-compliant options to help you meet ANSI and CSA training requirements, including:

  • Service and equipment training online through JLG University or in-person at the JLG training center and proving grounds
  • Train-the-Trainer courses to teach participants how to train MEWP operators
  • AccessReady e-learning modules for operators and supervisors
  • AccessReady XR offers a virtual reality experience that provides real-time interaction and true-to-life job site scenarios

To meet the training requirements in the updated standards, the JLG operator training programs are broken down into two sections: Theory and Practical. Our theory training includes:

  • Safe use as defined in A92.22
  • 25 specific items listed in A92.24
  • Knowledge evaluation

And, our practical training includes:

  • MEWP operation for a sufficient period of time to demonstrate proficiency
  • 7 specific items listed in A92.24
  • Practical evaluation

At JLG, we believe that compliance to the updated ANSI A92 and CSA B354 standards is critical and should not be taken lightly – or ignored. We will continue to lead by example, and we are committed to helping everyone in the industry be compliant.

You can find more information about how JLG is complying with the ANSI & CSA standards here.

*Old machines (equipment manufactured prior to the updated ANSI and CSA standards publish dates – December 2018 and May 2107, respectively) do not need to be retrofitted to meet the new standards.
