The Nation's Workforce Reaches 115 Million
The U.S. workforce is 115 million people strong.
There are 7.1 million job sites.

Over 8 Million Construction Workers
Construction is one of the nation’s largest industries, providing jobs
for 8.3 million workers.
The number includes 1.6 million self-employed and 6.7 million wage
and salary jobs.

Construction is a Significant Source of Jobs
Nonresidential construction accounted for at least 4.3 million workers
in May 2008.

Growing Skilled Worker Shortage
The construction industry will hire about 250,000 new workers each year
for the next seven years.
Only about 150,000 new workers will come into the trades, creating a continuing shortage of skilled workers.

Estimated 884,300 Construction Establishments in the
United States in 2008
269,700 were building construction contractors.
57,600 were heavy and civil engineering construction
or highway contractors.
557,000 were specialty trade contractors.
Most of these establishments tend to be small.
68 percent employed fewer than five workers.
About 12 percent of workers are employed by these very small contractors.
